Choosing the right family lawyer for your case

Children and family cases are among the most consequential legal matters a person will face. The decisions made about where children live, how time is divided, and what financial provision is made, can shape the next decade of your life. Who you choose to represent you and advocate for you therefore matters enormously.

The best family lawyers are those who are ready to fight in your corner under pressure, and fully prepared to litigate when negotiation fails. Vardags acts for high net worth clients whose family cases regularly involve complex financial structures, international elements, and children whose lives span more than one country.

How family lawyers can protect your children's interests

English family law places the welfare of the child above everything else. In a straightforward case, that principle is easy to apply. In a contested dispute, it is anything but simple.

High-conflict family cases can involve allegations of domestic abuse, parental alienation, expert psychological evidence, and in international matters, the involvement of foreign courts and authorities.

Vardags has extensive experience in family and child disputes, including contested arrangements, international relocation, and cases where one parents conduct has damaged the childs relationship with the other. The firm also handles Schedule 1 financial provision for children, which is particularly important in situations where the parents were never married and significant assets are involved.

Vardags is also the only family law firm in the country with a dedicated in-house Financial Forensics team, supporting cases where financial provision for children intersects with complex asset structures.

FAQs

What is a child arrangement order?

A child arrangement order sets out who a child lives with and how much time they spend with each parent. It can be made by consent or following a contested hearing. Once in place it is legally binding and enforceable.

How do family lawyers handle parental responsibility disputes?

Where parents cannot agree, a lawyer will seek to negotiate a resolution first and, if that fails, make an application to the court.

Can I relocate with my children after separation?

If a child arrangement order is in place, you will generally need either the other parents consent or a court order. For international moves the bar is even higher still. The court will weigh the impact on the childs relationship with the non-relocating parent, the reasons for the move, and whether meaningful contact can realistically be maintained. If the court believes the move will cause significant problems for the child, you can be refused.

What is the difference between family mediation and going to court?

Mediation uses a neutral third party to help parents reach agreement without litigation. It is faster and less adversarial in the right circumstances. It is not appropriate in every case. Where there has been domestic abuse, a significant power imbalance, or one party is acting in bad faith, court is often the only viable route. A good family lawyer will tell you honestly which path fits your situation.

How can Vardags help with my children and family law matters?

Vardags has a dedicated children and family team experienced across the full range of disputes. The firm holds a Tier 1 ranking in the Legal 500 across every office, and has a track record of winning at every level of the UK justice system. To discuss your circumstances, contact the team directly.
