Courts to use DNA tests to avoid ’embarrassing’ legal battles

The Justice Gap reported on the introduction of extended powers for the court to order DNA tests in order to determine a childs biological parents. The move was introduced to help reduce the length and scope of disputes in family law cases.

Georgina Hamblin, a director at Vardags, spoke to the magazine, welcoming the news. She said DNA testing is a long established tool in private family law cases. Indeed, it is a route by which many parents have been forced to accept responsibilities that they may otherwise have successfully shirked.

The decision, announced by Justice Minister Simon Hughes, was broadly welcomed by family lawyers and advisory services.
