John has over 40 years of experience in assisting high net worth individuals and international companies with their global financial and tax structuring, including the use of specialist asset protection and income repatriation techniques. He was previously a senior partner at a Big 4 accounting firm in London and head of their inbound international tax practice.
John has over 40 years of experience as a Chartered Accountant and tax adviser, specialising in complex global tax structuring and profit repatriation for large corporations and UHNW individuals.
After graduating with a BSc Hons in Mathematics from the University of Liverpool, he began his career at Chalmers Impey and Co. in Liverpool, specializing in statutory audit and financial reporting. John qualified as a Chartered Accountant and was admitted to membership of the ICAEW in 1980, where he has been a fellow member (FCA) since 1990.
In 1981 he joined Price Waterhouse in Manchester to help build their tax practice, with a focus on corporate and expatriate tax, and US profit repatriation. By 1987, he had moved to London as a senior manager in the International Tax group, dealing primarily with FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 companies. John was admitted as a partner at Price Waterhouse in 1989 and,
following the 1998 merger of Price Waterhouse and Coopers and Lybrand, he led PwC’s inbound international tax structuring practice based in London, working with large multinationals and UHNW family offices, as well as developing global tax strategies for a wide range of the firm’s clients across the US and Europe.
In 2018 he established his own Chartered Accountant firm focusing on international tax consulting, financial investigations and forensic accounting. His practice spans work across multiple regions, including the UK, Cyprus, Switzerland, the US, Cayman Islands, Malta, the UAE, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, Gibraltar, and Liechtenstein. He has provided litigation support in divorce and financial proceedings, acting as an interface between clients and external advisors, ensuring cost-effective and tax-efficient solutions.
As well as major multinational corporations, John’s clients have included family offices of privately-owned multinational corporations as well as wealthy entrepreneurs based in the UK and overseas. He is currently an adviser to international businesses based in the UK and Europe, as well as assisting high net worth entertainers and sportspeople with complex offshore tax matters.
John’s specialist skills enable him to work closely with Vardags’ clients to ensure that all tax aspects of their cases are properly considered, and any opportunities to enhance their position can be taken into account in financial proceedings and dispute resolution. He is particularly skilled in assessing the effects of the ever-changing landscape of the international tax system, including the ongoing focus by the OECD and UN on global tax avoidance following BEPS Actions, as well as SARBOX compliance. This expertise makes John perfectly placed to help clients navigate complex international tax regimes and their associated regulatory provisions.
