The criminal team was praised for its exceptional client care. Solicitors were said to "go the extra mile to ensure client's needs are met". The Head of Criminal Defence, Robert Conway was singled out for particular praise. "His client's love him," the guide reported, in no small part because he provides "clear and concise advice and leads the team with authority." Since the department's launch back in 2016, [Robert Conway](https://vardags.com/team) and [Lucy Winter](https://vardags.com/solicitors/london/lucy-winter) have built an outstanding reputation, with particular success in early-stage, pre-charge intervention. Providing full representation from pre-arrest to trial and criminal appeals, they have helped defend clients and protect their family lives and careers from accusations of fraud, sexual and drug offences, as well as driving and other offences. The pair have also increasingly gained a reputation for thought leadership, becoming the go-to industry experts for commentary in outlets such as [The Times](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/police-powers-to-search-the-phones-of-alleged-rape-victims-are-crucial-to-justice-2tssntkbg), [CityAM](https://www.cityam.com/dialling-down-music-wont-reduce-londons-crime-rate/) and [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-07-31/lawyers-cheer-cliff-richard-s-latest-hit-in-privacy-battle). > The criminal team at Vardags go the extra mile to ensure clients' needs are met" > "Robert Conway is a seasoned practitioner who provides clear and concise advice and leads the team with authority; his clients love him." For a small and relatively newly-formed team to be recommended in the Legal 500 is highly unusual and a testament to the calibre of work the department has been doing. Vardags, which "specialises in high-profile, high-net-worth and complex international litigation" also ranked for family departments based in London, Manchester and Cambridge, and Founder and President Ayesha Vardag was celebrated as a 'leading individual'.
