Ayesha Vardag on the lack of politial force behind matrimonial law reform

During a [Law Society Debate](https://www.lawgazette.co.uk/61302.article), [Ayesha Vardag](https://vardags.com/staff/ayesha-vardag/) said that there was 'No political will' to reform laws relating to marriage and divorce. She also described the traditional model of marriage as a "'*binding contract*" that is effectively "a blank cheque to the state in the person of the court".

Ayesha additionally lamented the fact that only expensive high value litigation is able to make precedent setting case law, saying that "We need a mechanism to allow new laws to be driven through the courts by people without money".

Ayesha's comments were featured alongside those from leading think tanks Civitas and the Centre for Social Justice. The debate looked at various aspects of family breakdown, a social problem which is estimated to costs taxpayers £100 bn per year.
