The hearing focused on the Laura Ashley chairman's failure to comply with court orders compelling him to pay his wife £50,000 in interim maintenance. The husband was described as "*feckless*" in court for his refusal to satisfy the orders, in words which were reported in the [Malay Mail](https://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/khoo-kay-peng-divorce-saga-billiionaire-accused-of-being-a-feckless-husband), [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-01-23/malaysian-millionaire-s-wife-seeks-330-million-in-u-k-divorce) and the Daily Telegraph. Ayesha Vardag, who represents Pauline Chai in her divorce, said "*his flagrant decision to breach the judge's order and pay her not one penny is particularly shameful*."

The husband was further criticised for not making a single offer to settle the case during the course of proceedings, and was accused of "thumbing his nose" at the English proceedings.
