The move was introduced to help reduce the length and scope of disputes in family law cases.

Georgina Hamblin, a director at Vardags, spoke to the magazine, welcoming the news. She said "*DNA testing is a long established tool in private family law cases. Indeed, it is a route by which many parents have been forced to accept responsibilities that they may otherwise have successfully shirked*."

The decision, announced by Justice Minister Simon Hughes, was broadly welcomed by family lawyers and advisory services.
