New Year, new (single) you?
===========================

![New Year, new (single) you?](https://vardags.com/images/pictures/_360/3d38eb0e42e7fe4720b1203d6c5e6eac.jpeg)With the end of Christmas excitement, life tends not only to return to normal, but actually to become quieter in January.

There are a few exceptions to this rule as some things tend to see a surge in January: healthy eating, gym memberships - and divorce. There are various reasons for this January upturn in divorce proceedings.

Firstly, January provides hope of a fresh start for all areas of life. The end of one year and the beginning of another allows individuals to reflect on their life as it currently stands, by comparison with the direction in which they would *prefer*their life to be going in.

Secondly, those with children often prefer the thought of waiting until after Christmas to create potential upset and upheaval.

Thirdly - and though there are no carols with lyrics quite to this effect - the Christmas period is arguably one of the most stressful times of the year. An intense period of family and in-laws, a concentrated amount of time with your loved ones, without the relief of everyday routine, copious amounts of alcohol and elevated expectations can result in a destructive cocktail for some couples.

The first thing that anyone considering getting divorced should do is to seek specialist advice at an early stage, no matter what time of year you are going through the process. There are ways of reducing the strain that a divorce can create. Though undeniably difficult for anyone experiencing it, divorce does not necessarily have to be a synonym for a hostile, unhappy time. In fact, it is especially crucial that where children are involved, the process should be as amicable as possible.
