Only a short time after media tycoon Rupert Murdoch announced his engagement to model and actress Jerry Hall, news broke that fellow Aussie media man James Packer is set to marry warbling diva Mariah Carey.
Both are ultra high net worth individuals in their own right. Mariah Carey is one of the biggest selling recording artist of all time, with an estimated net worth of $500 million USD (£320.2 million).
This is somewhat dwarfed however by the assets of her intended, who is Australia’s fourth richest man with an estimated fortune of $4.5 billion USD (£3.1billion).
The transpacific pair have only been an item for a few months, going public with their relationship while on holiday on the Italian island of Capri in June 2015.
This will be the third marriage for both parties. Ms Carey was famously unhappily married to music executive and ex-Sony boss Tommy Mottola for three years in the early nineties while her stratospheric career took off. She married hip hop artist Nick Cannon in 2008 before their marriage ended in divorce in 2015.
Mr Packer has previously been married to Australian model Jodhi Meares and model and singer Erica Baxter. It could be third time lucky for the pair of them.
The press is having a field day over Ms Carey’s engagement ring, a sizable rock that has been identified as a 30 carat emerald cut diamond and valued by external commentators as being around $7.5 million USD (£5million).
James Packer’s late father was Kerry Packer, media mogul and Murdoch arch-rival; himself a scion of the powerful Packer media family who had a controlling interest in Australia’s Nine Network and Australian Consolidated Press. Kerry Packer is also known for founding World Series Cricket.
