Vardags is a world-renowned law firm for high net worth individuals and companies led by “Britain’s top divorce lawyer”, Ayesha Vardag. Vardags’ team has been hand-picked from the best academic and commercial institutions.

We are looking for a valuer with tax expertise able to assist both with matrimonial and other cases and on a stand-alone basis.


Typical areas of advice are:

  • Calculating the value and latent tax liabilities of shareholding and corporate assets involved in divorce proceedings. This may include UK and international assets for both UK-resident (domiciled or non-domiciled) and non-UK-resident individuals and may include assets held through trusts or other structures;
  • Determining ways of creating liquidity from a business, trust or other structure (both UK and international) and understanding the tax implications thereof;
  • Assisting with creative settlement structures that allow corporate assets to be preserved or effectively managed post-divorce;
  • Determining actual tax liabilities (including interest/penalties) when an individual or company has historically not complied with tax obligations;
  • Determining (in conjunction with foreign-qualified professionals) the implications of an individual moving to/from the UK (this might be part of a family law case or a stand-alone basis).

Work will include: 

  • Assisting with the triage of client enquiries, in particular producing quick and approximate valuations of corporate assets based on publicly-available information.
  •  Attending initial client meetings to understand the issues involved and provide preliminary advice on corporate and trust assets;
  • Leading analysis on corporate/trust valuations and latent tax liabilities; codifying into a format to be disclosed to the other side of a matrimonial case;
  • Critically analysing the disclosure of corporate/trust assets of the other side of a matrimonial case; providing simple explanations to the client, spotting omissions, errors and questions to be posed;
  • Briefing and attending meetings with clients and with matrimonial and/or tax counsel;
  • Identifying appropriate single or joint valuation and/or tax experts;
  • Writing letters of instruction to single or joint valuation or tax experts;
  • Reviewing the reports of single or joint valuation or tax experts; providing simple explanations of their report; spotting errors and posing questions;
  • Attending court.


Essential:

  • Qualified accountant
  • At least 3 years of post-qualification experience in company valuations and tax
  • Client-friendly
  • Comfortable working collaboratively with a team of lawyers


Desirable

  • Experience in valuations within the context of litigation

The position is a full-time role based in London with occasional travel to our offices in Manchester and Cambridge

During your time on our Graduate Trainee Programme, you will spend the majority of your time training with the Divorce and Financial Remedies team. You will also have the opportunity to rotate through various departments in the firm including Children, Civil Litigation, Reputation & Privacy, Property and Criminal, and gain exposure to critical legal support activities such as debt recovery and compliance. You will be able to attend law school as required, and we will be offering the SQE route to qualification if you have not already commenced your legal education.

On a day to day basis you will get involved in a wide range of activities including:

  • Case preparation: creating bundles for various purposes including court hearings and conferences with clients and counsel.
  • Attending court to issue proceedings or other applications when necessary
  • Legal research to understand case precedents, spark creative solutions and create valuable know how.
  • Drafting legal documents such as Form A and case chronology.
  • Liaison with barristers’ clerks including booking counsel and updating counsel’s papers.
  • Liaison with clients on behalf of fee earners
  • Attending and taking attendance note of meetings with client, counsel, etc.
  • Obtaining information from third parties i.e. Land Registry, Companies House, etc.
  • Administrative supportfor fee earners such as time recording and saving e-mails.

  • Excellent degree level education in Law or other discipline
  • Strong performance in post-graduate legal courses (if taken).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Track record of experiences and achievements that demonstrate resilience and emotional intelligence.
